LONDON (Alliance News) - Cigarettes are to be sold in plain packaging in the UK before the next election, after a U-turn by Prime Minister David Cameron designed to head off Labour claims that he is in hock to the tobacco lobby, The Times reports Thursday.
The Government will announce within days that it is pressing ahead with the measure, aimed at making smoking less attractive to youngsters, the paper says.
Senior sources told The Times that months of internal pressure from the Department of Health and health campaigners on the merits of the policy was as much a factor in the U-turn.
