LONDON (Alliance News) - The Church of England is considering selling its GBP3 million stake in Soco International PLC over concerns about the company's operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Guardian reported on Saturday.
Justin Welby, the archbishop of Canterbury, is a former oil executive and has reportedly said the church may sell its stake in Soco unless it receives a number of reassurances from the company, whose decision to carry out a seismic survey in Virunga national park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was featured in a documentary backed by actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
Soco has said it does not operate in the mountainous Mikeno sector of the park, which is home to around half of the world?s 950 mountain gorillas and is at the centre of the church's concerns.
