LONDON (Alliance News) - BP PLC has given workers who were striking at its refinery in Whiting in the US a new ratified four year contract to formally end a three-month strike, Reuters reported on Tuesday.
Citing the President of the United Steelworkers local chapter, Dave Danko, who represents the hourly employees, Reuters said the workers are scheduled to begin returning to work on May 18 in staggered groups.
BP has kept the refinery in operation using temporary replacement workers since February 8 when United Steelworker members walked out as part of the largest strike by US refinery and chemical plant workers in 35 years, said Reuters.
The national strike eventually expanded to workers at 15 plants including 12 refineries that account for one-fifth of US capacity. These refineries were owned and operated by numerous companies. The dispute started over tighter standards to prevent worker fatigue and the use of contractors in day-to-day plant maintenance.
