PRESS: Barclays Considers Scaling Back In Africa - Financial Times

16th Dec 2015 08:36

LONDON (Alliance News) - Barclays PLC is considering whether to sell some or all of its banking operations in Africa, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday.

The question comes as part of a review led by Jes Staley, who began work as the bank's new chief executive at the start of December.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the report said Staley has questioned the strategic fit of Barclays' African business with the rest of the group. No decision has been taken yet, the people told the FT.

Staley is unlikely to pull out of the continent, people familiar with the matter told the FT, although retail banking operations in much of Africa could be sold, with some corporate and investment banking activities in the region retained.

Barclays declined to comment, the report said.

Shares in Barclays were down 0.2% at 214.45 pence on Wednesday.
