PRESS: Ashley In "New Year's Pledge" To Up Pay For Sports Direct Staff

31st Dec 2015 06:53

LONDON (Alliance News) - Sports Direct International PLC founder Mike Ashley has pledged to spend GBP10.0 million on raising the pay of all of the retailer's employees to ensure everyone is paid above the minimum wage.

In an interview with the Daily Mirror, Ashley said the sports clothing and equipment retailer will announce an increase of around 15 pence per hour for staff currently paid the national minimum wage. The changes will take effect from January 1 and will benefit around 15,000 workers currently employed on zero-hours contracts, along with 4,000 agency staff in its Shirebrook depot in Derbyshire.

The move comes weeks after The Guardian published a report claiming many temporary workers at Shirebrook were being made effectively under the minimum wage.

"I'm making a New Year's resolution pledge to the Daily Mirror - and I'm deadly serious," Ashley told the paper. "I want to see Sports Direct become the best high street retail employer, after John Lewis."
