Powerhouse Energy granted European patent for waste treatment

15th Oct 2024 11:56

(Alliance News) - Powerhouse Energy Group PLC on Tuesday announced that its European patent has been granted, following the resolution of the legal action brought against it last year.

The Bingley, England-based non-recyclable waste-to-energy conversion company said its patent for the "method and apparatus for the treatment of waste material" was fully granted on October 11 by the European Patent Office.

The patent was to protect the control of heating of waste within the thermal conversion chamber over several zones, which allows the optimum synthesis gas to be produced and the temperature profile in the chamber to be adjusted to give the optimal syngas composition. The thermal conversion chamber is the kiln where the conversion of the waste feedstock to a syngas takes place.

The grant of the patent follows a contesting claim filed by Onunda Ltd, formerly GetGo Recyling Ltd, in November 2023. The claim was resolved in May this year, ensuring that no additional challenge to Powerhouse Energy's patents worldwide will be raised by Onunda or any of its group companies.

Chief Executive Officer Paul Emmitt says: "I am delighted that this patent has been granted. This justifies the hard work put into the application, and into the development of the technology preceding that, by the Powerhouse Energy team. This is the second patent to be granted to the company and provides significant protection for the technology that differentiates Powerhouse Energy from others in the waste-to-energy sector. I look forward to providing further updates in due course."

Shares in Powerhouse Energy were up 7.3% at 1.14 pence each in London on late Tuesday morning.
