LONDON (Alliance News) - Polymetal International PLC on Friday said it has become a signatory to the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMC) that outlines standards of practice for using and managing cyanide in the gold production process.
The ICMC was developed by a multi-stakeholder steering committee under the guidance of the United Nations Environmental Programme. The ICMC is a voluntary industry programme aimed at improving the use, manufacturing and transport of cyanide within the gold market.
Polymetal, which has gold mines in Russia and Kazakhstan, will be subject to third-party audits every three years, and the miner said the first of its operations to become certified under the ICMC will be the flagship Amursk POX plant in Russia.
"The principles and standards of the International Cyanide Management Code are regarded as industry best practices," said Polymetal. "The Cyanide Code is intended to complement an operation's existing obligation to comply with the applicable laws and regulations of the political jurisdiction in which the operation is located."
