LONDON (Alliance News) - Trinity Mirror PLC said Friday that the Metropolitan Police Service will take "no further action" in relation to its criminal investigation into its subsidiary MGN Ltd over the phone hacking scandal.
In a statement, Director of Public Prosecutions at the Crown Prosecution Service Alison Saunders said that after thorough analysis it has decided there is "insufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of a conviction."
"There has been considerable public concern about phone hacking and invasion of privacy. Over the past three years, we have brought 12 prosecutions and secured nine convictions for these serious offences. These decisions bring the CPS's involvement in current investigations into phone hacking to a close," Saunders said.
Trinity Mirror said it is awaiting the outcome of the Court of Appeal hearing in regards to civil claims related to the phone hacking. Trinity Mirror has appealed a ruling over the amount of money it must pay to the victims of phone hacking in civil claims; whilst MGN had already accepted it should pay "appropriate compensation", it argued that the basis used for calculating the damages was incorrect, and the amounts awarded by the judged are excessive and disproportionate.
In May the company was ordered to pay GBP1.2 million to eight phone-hacking victims.
Shares in Trinity Mirror were up 3.9% at 168.25 pence Friday morning.
