(Alliance News) - Oxford Instruments PLC on Tuesday said it plans to return GBP50 million to shareholders after announcing the GBP60 million sale of Oxford Instruments NanoScience.
The Abingdon, England-based provider of high technology products and services to industry and scientific research communities said it is selling its quantum-focused business to San Diego-based Quantum Design International Inc.
Quantum Design International offers a range of products and services for scientific, academic and industrial research.
Oxford Instruments said the GBP60m cash consideration includes up to GBP3 million of deferred consideration linked to future revenues from quantum scaling systems.
In financial 2025, NanoScience generated around GBP59 million of revenue and GBP1 million of adjusted operating profit.
"Having returned the business to growth and profitability, this sale crystallises this value for shareholders," the firm said in a statement.
Chief Executive Richard Tyson said the sale "is in line with our strategy to focus and invest in the best areas of opportunity to grow the group and create value for shareholders, and supports progress towards our medium-term margin targets."
"It is also consistent with our focus on our three core markets: materials analysis, semiconductor, and healthcare and life science."
Oxford Instruments said, given the strength of the balance sheet, the group plans to return up to GBP50 million to shareholders via a share buyback, commencing shortly.
The sale is expected to complete in the third quarter of financial 2026.
In addition, Oxford Instruments said full-year results, scheduled to be released Tuesday, will be delayed to allow the group's auditors, BDO LLP further time to complete its standard audit procedures.
Shares in Oxford Instruments were 1.1% lower at 1,884.00 pence each in London on Tuesday morning.
