LONDON (Alliance News) - Theresa May's popularity ratings have increased significantly from a year ago with more than half of the respondents of a survey saying that she has what it takes to be a good Prime Minister of the UK, surveyor Ipsos Mori said Wednesday.
A survey conducted between July 9 and 11 showed that 55% believed that the Home Secretary has what its takes to be a good PM, up from 28% in July last year.
May is set to become the new Prime Minister later on Wednesday.
Among Conservative voters, 81% thought she was the right fit for the PM job.
The vast majority of the poll was conducted before Andrea Leadsom unexpectedly quit the race on Monday, leaving just May as the contender. The survey found that 18% felt Leadsom would be a good PM.
Meanwhile, the ratings for the former London Mayor and the prominent "leave" campaigner Boris Johnson declined with 70% of those surveyed saying that he does not have the skills to be a good PM, up from 52% a year ago.
The ratings for the incumbent David Cameron fell to a record low with just 28% expressing satisfaction of his performance as a PM, which was down seven points from the previous month. Sixty-six % were dissatisfied with him, up eight points from June.
His net rating of -38 is comparable with public views of Gordon Brown in 2009, Ipsos Mori said.
Amid the severe crisis in the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn's ratings also fell to the lowest since he became the leader of the party. Twenty-four % were satisfied with him, down three points in the month.
On the other hand, 65% were dissatisfied with Corbyn, up 13 points.
His rating among Labour voters also declined with 45% satisfied and 48% dissatisfied.
