LONDON (Alliance News) - NCC Group PLC Monday said it has acquired the right to operate the .trust internet domain from Deutsche Post for an undisclosed fee.
In a statement, NCC Group, which provides escrow and assurance, said it will use the domain to launch its Artemis internet security service, which it expects to be commercially available from the start of NCC's next financial year in June.
NCC said it is still in contention to acquire the .secure domain from the Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers, the private sector, non-profit corporation created in 1998 with responsibility for assigning top level domains.
"We are on course to launch a secure and trusted internet environment in our next financial year. .trust provides us with our first gTLD for our Artemis internet security service. We are also confident of signing up our first customers for this exciting and innovative service shortly," Rob Cotton, chief executive, said in a statement.
"Having more than one gTLD for the Artemis platform will be very beneficial and we remain fully committed to the ICANN allocation process for .secure," he added.
Deutsche Post acquired the .trust domain through ICANN's new generic Top Level Domain process in 2013 but has now chosen not to use it, according to NCC.
A top level domain name is the suffix of an internet address, such as .com or .net, which are designated to approved organisations by ICANN. Recent changes to the rules governing domain names will allow far more suffixes to be used than has been allowed up to now.
NCC Group shares were Monday quoted at 202.27 pence, down 2.98 pence, or 1.5%.
