(Alliance News) - Mobico Group PLC on Thursday said it has appointed former boss Phil White as its next chair, succeeding Helen Weir, who is stepping down for personal reasons.
The Birmingham-based public transport operator said White will take over as chair on May 1, having previously served as chief executive officer of National Express - the former name of Mobico - from 1997 to 2006. During his tenure as CEO, White led the group's international expansion and oversaw the transformational acquisition of Spanish bus operator Alsa SA, the company noted.
White is currently senior independent director at Harrogate, England-based equipment rental company Vp PLC, a role which Mobico says he will relinquish on June 30. However, this has not yet been formally announced by Vp, which on Thursday only noted his upcoming appointment to Mobico's board
Mobico Senior Independent Director Karen Geary said: "We are delighted that Phil will be joining the company. He brings considerable experience from across the transport sector and chairing other leading UK listed businesses, as well as his insight and knowledge from previously leading National Express Group."
White said Mobico had gone through significant changes since his time as CEO but added: "What remains the same is the valuable role that public transport and the company play in society. I'm looking forward to working with the board and executive team to address the challenges and opportunities ahead."
Mobico had announced in early February that Weir, who was appointed to the board in 2022 and has served as chair since January 2023, would not stand for re-election as a director at the 2025 annual general meeting for "personal reasons". She will formally leave the board when White takes over in May.
Shares in Mobico were up 0.6% at 63.25 pence in London on Thursday morning.
