Mkango produces first recycled rare earth alloy at Birmingham plant

7th Jul 2025 12:24

(Alliance News) - Mkango Resources Ltd on Monday announced the first commercial production of recycled rare earth alloy at its new facility in Birmingham.

The Malawi-focused producer of recycled rare earth magnets, alloys, and oxides said the recycled neodymium-iron-boron alloy powder was produced using patented hydrogen processing of magnet scrap technology developed by the University of Birmingham.

The processing vessel, now operating at commercial scale at Tyseley Energy Park, is a central part of the UK's first rare earth sintered magnet production plant, Mkango said.

Mkango added that initial UK sales of 0.5 tonnes of recycled alloy per month are targeted by the end of July, ramping up to at least 2 tonnes per month by the end of 2025.

Future capacity could reach 100 to 350 tonnes annually in 2026, with further expansions under evaluation.

The NdFeB alloy contains over 28% total rare-earth content and will initially be sold to third parties for chemical processing, before being used in-house for magnet production once additional plant commissioning is complete by the end of the third quarter.

The Birmingham facility is operated by Mkango's subsidiary HyProMag Ltd, which holds an exclusive licence to use the hydrogen processing technology. HyProMag also plans to roll out the process in Germany, the US, and other regions.

Mkango Chief Executive Will Dawes said the milestone marked "a major step forward for the UK's critical mineral ambitions", adding that the project "creates a strong platform for further expansion in the UK."

Shares in Mkango rose 2.5% to 31.76 in London on Monday afternoon.
