LONDON (Alliance News) - Medusa Mining Ltd Thursday said an unnamed assistant of a contract miner has died at the Co-O underground mine in the Philippines.
The gold miner said, through its Philippines operating company Philsaga Mining Corp, that the fatal accident happened on Wednesday, and all relevant government departments have been notified of the incident.
The company said initial investigations reveal that a dislodged large rock hit the assistant while he was cleaning up around an ore pass. The rock knocked him down the ore pass and then landed on his abdominal region.
After initially being taken to the company hospital for treatment, he was pronounced dead on arrival to the Davao Regional Hospital for hospitalisation.
Medusa had ceased all mining operations at the Philippine site during January following intense weather disruptions, which caused extensive flooding and landslides near the mine, but it reopened the mine on January 28 after the weather problems eased.
The company said at the time that the bad weather also caused extensive damage to several sections of the haul road between the mine and the mill, and work had started to repair the damage.
Medusa Mining shares were down 4.2% to 111.06 pence Thursday.
