(Alliance News) - Marula Mining PLC on Monday announced a memorandum of understanding with the Geological Society of Kenya, and a research partnership with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology.
The Africa-focused mining and development company said the five-year collaborative research & academic agreement, between it and Jomo Kenyatta or JKUAT, aims to establish a framework for joint research in the mining, mineral processing, mineral value addition and associated fields.
Marula said both it and Juja, Kenya-based JKUAT will exchange information through educational and applied research programmes "focused on maximising value from the development of Kenya's mining sector".
Calling the deal "a major milestone", Marula Chief Executive Jason Brewer said: "It is no secret that our ambitions for Marula extend beyond just conventional mining and mineral processing and into the production of high-value, refined and intermediate critical metal products for the electric vehicle and energy transition sectors.
"Marula is delighted to be working alongside such a prestigious and established technical university here in Kenya and through this partnership we are looking at establishing Kenya at the forefront of mineral research in the critical metals sector."
Also on Monday, Marula announced the MoU with the Geological Society of Kenya (GSK), which it said is "dedicated to promoting the advancement of the geological and geosciences profession in Kenya through professional networking, training, and the facilitation of industry partnerships".
Marula said the partnership aims to strengthen its and GSK's profiles within Kenya's mineral sector and wider business landscape.
Under the MoU, which covers an initial one-year period, Marula will become a corporate GSK member and participate in "industry networking forums and branding opportunities". It also includes GSK offering access to technical support in exploration, environmental compliance, field research and project evaluation through its "expert consultant network".
Shares in Marula, which are listed on the Aquis Stock Exchange, have been suspended from trading in London since July 1.
