LONDON (Alliance News) - Manx Telecom PLC said Tuesday it will launch the first 4G mobile network on the Isle of Man with a predicted population coverage of 95%.
The communications company said the service will be automatically included in tariff's for Manx Telecom customers on a 'Pay monthly' contract whose phones are capable to using 4G. Around 42% of smart phones owned by Manx's customers are capable of using 4G, and the company will run a trade-in scheme for customers wishing to upgrade their devices.
Manx Telecom said speeds on the new network would be up to seven times faster than its existing 3G network.
The 95% population coverage is substantially ahead of its 4G licence commitment, the company said, where it has committed to a minimum of 33% coverage at launch and 95% two years after launch.
"The extensive footprint of our 4G network positions Manx Telecom significantly ahead of peers both on the Isle of Man and elsewhere in Europe," said Chief Executive Mike Dee in a statement. "It also signals our commitment to ensuring that the Isle of Man remains a leading business and investment hub, with a best in class communications network."
Shares in Manx Telecom were trading up 0.3% at 166.50 pence Tuesday morning.
