LONDON (Alliance News) - Kier Group PLC on Thursday said it welcomed the announcement from the UK government confirming approval for the Hinkley Point C nuclear station to go ahead.
Residential, construction and services group Kier has been undertaking site preparation works at Hinkley Point since 2012 alongside its joint venture partner BAM Nuttall, and said there are around 350 Kier employees working on the project.
The joint venture is responsible for preliminary works on the power station, including excavations of over 5.6 million cubic metres of material, large scale earthworks, the development of complex terracing structures, and the creation of an extensive road network.
The Hinkley Point C power plant, due to be built in Somerset, is being financed by a Chinese nuclear power provider and French energy giant EDF. A decision over the project had previously been delayed amid reported concerns about the role of Beijing in the project.
"Today's decision marks a major step in the UK's nuclear renaissance and reflects the country's commitment to a balanced energy strategy including low carbon energy sources. Kier has excellent and proven capabilities in the nuclear industry and we look forward to working with EDF on the pipeline of opportunities that will arise from this project and on further energy projects in the UK in due course," said Kier Chief Executive Haydn Mursell.
Shares in Kier were down 0.5% at 1,218.00 pence on Thursday.
