Kenmare Repatriates South Africans Mozambique Mine Amid Unrest

20th Apr 2015 07:32

LONDON (Alliance News) - Kenmare Resources PLC on Monday said it has temporarily repatriated its South African employees from the Moma Mine in Mozambique amid unrest in South Africa over foreign workers.

Kenmare said it had made the decision to repatriate the workers, who represent 62 of the 1,391-strong workforce at the mine, amid unrest in South Africa regarding foreign workers which has created a reciprocal unrest concerning South Africans working in Mozambique.

At least six people were killed in xenophobic attacks in Durban, a large city on South Africa's east coast, in the past fortnight, with violence then spreading to further areas. Many South Africans have accused migrants, primarily from other African states and Asia, of taking jobs in the country amid an unemployment rate of 24%. Migrants have moved to the country in large numbers since the end of white-minority rule in 1994.

Kenmare said the respective governments of Mozambique and South Africa are working to quell the unrest, and there is no suggestion the workers will not be able to return.

The company expects operations at Moma to continue without any significant disruption. It said it will provide further updates as the situation develops.

Shares in Kenmare were down 0.6% to 3.28 pence on Monday.
