Just Eat Takeaway buys Slovakian food delivery firm for EUR50 million

16th Jul 2021 09:26

(Alliance News) - Just Eat Takeaway.com NV has bought Slovakian online food delivery business Bistro.sk for EUR50 million as its continues its expansion overseas, it announced on Friday.

Bratislava, Slovakia-based Bistro.sk operates a similar online food delivery business model to Just Eat and claims to partner with around 2,000 online restaurants, serving more than 400,000 consumers.

"With the acquisition of Bistro.sk we are adding a profitable and highly complementary online food delivery platform to our geographical footprint," commented Chief Operating Officer Joerg Gerbig.

"The business has strong foundations we can build on: a number one position in online food delivery, market leading top-of-mind brand awareness and attractive consumer cohorts. We look forward to growing the business."

Ownership of the group will transfer to Just Eat Takeaway from media group Ringier Axel Springer Media following the expected close of the deal later in 2021. Bistro.sk will then adopt the Just Eat branding going forward.

The further expansion of Just Eat's international operations follows its entry into the online food delivery market in the US, with its USD7.3 billion all-share purchase of Chicago-headquartered Grubhub Inc back in June.

Shares in Just Eat Takeaway were down 3.7% at 5,620.00 pence each in London on Friday morning.
