ITM Power Upgrades Flagship Station So It Can Serve More Vehicles

22nd Sep 2016 08:27

LONDON (Alliance News) - ITM Power PLC on Thursday said it has completed the refurbishment of the hydrogen refuelling station located on the M1 near Rotherham, which was funded by the UK government and the Office of Low Emission Vehicles.

The energy storage and clean fuel firm was given GBP2.9 million last year under grants for hydrogen refuelling station infrastructure, used by hydrogen vehicles, which was run by the Office of Low Emissions.

The award was to build two new HRS in London, sited with strategic partners and for the upgrading of four existing ITM Power refuelling stations including the one upgraded on Thursday in Rotherham.

The refuelling station was originally funded by Innovate UK, the government's "innovation agency" sponsored by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy which supplies funding for certain projects.

The station lies at the Hydrogen Mini Grid at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham just of junction 33 of the M1, close to the junction with the M18.

ITM Power said, using the existing electrolyser to generate hydrogen from an on-site wind turbine, the original 350 bar dispenser has been upgraded to a new BOC/Linde system capable of dispensing hydrogen at both 700 and 350 bar.

"The higher pressure of 700 bar satisfies the requirements of a broader range of vehicles and enables fuel cell electric vehicles such at the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai ix35 to achieve their full driving range of over 300 miles," said the company. "New and existing customers will also benefit from automated payment facilities."

Putting that into a bit more perspective, a 350 dispenser is equal to compression within hydrogen tanks of 5,000 pounds per square inch (psi) whereas a 700 bar dispenser has a psi of 10,000.

Following site preparation, the joint commissioning teams of ITM and BOC/Linde completed commissioning in a period of two weeks. Focus has now shifted to the Centre for Engineering & Manufacturing Excellence in Rainham, where equipment is undergoing commissioning ahead of the official opening on October 11.

"The M1 hydrogen refuelling station is a flagship green hydrogen station which has an important strategic role serving the Northern M1 corridor. This important upgrade strengthens our developing portfolio of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure and forms an important part of the UKs hydrogen roll out," said Chief Executive Graham Cooley.

ITM shares were up 2.3% to 22.0 pence per share on Thursday morning.
