ITM Power technology to be used by Sumitomo in hydrogen experiment

7th Jul 2021 12:32

(Alliance News) - ITM Power PLC on Wednesday noted that trading firm Sumitomo Corp and Japanese utilities firm Tokyo Gas Co Ltd will be using ITM technology in a hydrogen demonstration experiment in Japan related to carbon dioxide emission reductions.

The Sheffield-based hydrogen power equipment maker said that the two Tokyo-based firms will be conducting a joint hydrogen utilization demonstration experiment using a megawatt-class solid polymer water electrolyser developed by ITM.

Hydrogen produced by water electrolysers using electricity derived from renewable sources of energy is considered to be green hydrogen and a "trump card" for carbon-free societies in that no CO2 emissions are produced during its production process, the company said.

"In this demonstration, we will be verifying the operation of ITM Power's large water electrolyser. This is the first operational verification to be carried out in Japan on a foreign-made large water electrolyser," ITM said.

"Sumitomo Corp entered into a strategic partnership with ITM Power in 2018 and has been working to introduce the company's solid polymer water electrolyser into the Japanese market. ITM Power's advanced and cost-competitive electrolysis technology is set to drive green hydrogen production projects in Japan that use large electrolysers," said Sumitomo.

ITM shares were down 0.4% at 464.09 pence each in London on Wednesday.
