LONDON (Alliance News) - ITM Power PLC on Tuesday said the HyDeploy project will run a year-long trial blending hydrogen into an existing natural gas network.
Shares in the energy storage and clean fuel company, which is supplying the electrolyser system for the trial, were up 13% on Tuesday at 31.10 pence.
HyDeploy is a GBP6.8 million project funded by UK energy regulator Ofgem and its ultimate goal is to "establish the potential for blending up to 20% hydrogen into the normal gas supply" in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
The live trial will take place at the University of Keele, Staffordshire, using the university's gas network without making changes to gas appliances or pipework.
"The significance of this announcement, allowing up to 20% green hydrogen to be injected into a UK gas network, is hard to overstate. Power-to-gas in the UK is under active consideration by all gas grid operators and its significance as an energy storage technique is growing globally. This announcement is an important advance," said ITM Power Chief Executive Graham Cooley.
