LONDON (Alliance News) - ITM Power PLC on Friday said it secured funding from Innovate UK, which covers a feasibility study to deploy a 100 megawatt power-to-gas energy storage project in Cheshire, UK.
The energy storage company said this project explores the electrolytic production, pipeline transmission, salt cavern storage and gas grid injection of green hydrogen at an industrial scale.
The project aims to demonstrate a 100 megawatt power-to-gas energy storage system which can produce low carbon hydrogen for heat, decarbonisation of industry, and transport fuel.
Meanwhile, the feasibility study will explore the system design and costs and will assess the business case for deployment.
Project partners, including ITM Power, INOVYN, Storengy, Cadent and Element Energy wish to explore the feasibility of siting a 100 megawatt proton exchange membrane electrolyser at the INOVYN runcorn site, which already produces hydrogen as a co-product of the chlor-alkali process.
This site has an existing 420 megawatt supergrid connection, power electronics and planning consent for industrial scale hydrogen production, ITM Power said.
Upon completion, the company expects the project for the first-time to inject a power-to-gas system hydrogen into the public gas network in the UK at scale.
"Power to gas energy storage is key to decarbonise European energy systems," explained Storengy UK managing Director Catherine Gras.
"The project explores green hydrogen production, pipeline transmission, salt cavern storage and gas grid injection at an industrial scale and will assess the business case for deployment," added ITM Power Chief Executive Graham Cooley.
ITM Power shares were flat on Friday at 26.50 pence each.
