(Alliance News) - ITM Power PLC said on Monday it plans to double electrolyser capacity at its Whitelee wind farm, making it the largest in Britain.
The Energy storage and clean fuel company said it had submitted a planning application for a 20 megawatt electrolyser at the Whitelee site near Glasgow, the UK's largest onshore wind farm.
In a statement ITM Power said: "The Whitlee wind farm is the first site for which planning permission has been sought as part of the Green Hydrogen for Glasgow project. The project is designed to provide carbon-free transport and clean air for communities across the city, which wants to become the first net-zero city in the UK by 2030."
A decision on the planning application is expected by the end of autumn 2021.
The proposed green hydrogen project will be led by Glasgow-based ScottishPower and engineered and operated by BOC Ltd, part of Linde PLC, using wind and solar power produced by ScottishPower Renewables. The project will incorporate a 20MW electrolyser delivered by ITM Power.
The project aims to supply hydrogen to the commercial market before 2023.
"This is an exciting milestone based on market development for green hydrogen for the city of Glasgow, that will see the UK's largest electrolyser deployment to date being realised in Scotland," said ITM Power Chief Executive Graham Cooley.
Shares in ITM Power were quoted at 476.97 pence in London on Monday morning, down 2.8%.
