ITM Power Notes Delivery Of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles To London

13th Oct 2015 09:01

LONDON (Alliance News) - ITM Power PLC on Tuesday noted the announcement from London Mayor Boris Johnson that a tiny influx of hydrogen-powered vehicles is on its way to the capital, some of which ITM will use. The news also will boost ITM's involvement in the HyFIVE project.

Japanese car giant Toyota met with Johnson, who is on a trade mission to Japan, as it is set to deliver Toyota Mirai fuel cell electric vehicles to London as part of the HyFIVE project. The European-wide initiative led by the mayor in collaboration with 15 partners, including manufacturers and infrastructure providers, to deliver electric vehicles to the UK capital.

Toyota is set to deliver 12 Mirai hydrogen-powered vehicles, four of which will be taken by Transport for London to assist with essential engineering and maintenance work carried out between bus stops and Tube stations.

The Mirai is the first hydrogen fuel cell sedan vehicle to be commercially mass produced. By the end of 2015, all 12 of the vehicles will be on the road in the capital, to be used by private hire fleets and green-minded businesses including ITM Power.

To put those 12 vehicles into context, there are currently just 7 zero-emission hydrogen passenger cars in London, but with the arrival of the Mirai and further cars expected from South Korean motor manufacturer Hyundai this number is set to more than triple in the coming year, it said.

More than 300 of the cars are now on the streets in Japan where infrastructure for the cars is rapidly growing. It is also being adopted in some parts of the US as well as Germany, Denmark and Belgium.

The arrival of the new zero-emission cars in London is supported by the roll-out of vital new refuelling stations for hydrogen vehicles and by the mayor's plan to introduce the world's first Ultra Low Emission Zone from 2020. The number of hydrogen refuelling stations in London is set to more than double by the end of 2016.

The hydrogen-powered cars and associated refuelling stations are being delivered through the HyFIVE project which aims to deploy 110 fuel cell electric vehicles from five global automotive companies, namely BMW, Daimler AG, Honda Europe, Hyundai Motor Europe and Toyota Motor Europe.

It plans to deliver six new refuelling stations in London, adding to the two existing stations, which will be delivered by infrastructure providers Air Products, Danish Hydrogen Fuel, Linde, OMV and ITM.

Five new stations will be operational by the end of 2016 which will offer a strategic hydrogen infrastructure cover for the capital.

ITM shares were trading up 7.0% to 28.90 pence per share on Tuesday morning.
