ITM Power Hands Over Gas-To-Power Plant To RWE In Germany

18th Aug 2015 06:51

LONDON (Alliance News) - ITM Power Ltd Tuesday said it has officially launched the RWE gas-to-power plant in Germany it has supplied for RWE Deutschland AG.

The energy storage and clean fuel company won a contract from RWE in December 2014 to supply a rapid response power-to-gas PEM electrolyser system in Ibbenbüren, North Rhine Westphalia, Germany.

The plant converts electrical energy into chemical energy and thus facilitates the storage of electrical energy.

Any excess electricity from renewable sources is converted into hydrogen so it can be stored within the natural gas network. It can then be recalled from there at a later date for use in electricity production that boasts an extremely high utilisation rate. This power-to-gas process is seen as one of the "key technologies for tomorrow's energy supply", according to a statement from RWE on Monday.

"The state-of-the-art plant is part of a new system that, for the first time ever, links together the supply of local electricity, natural gas and district heating," added ITM Power on Tuesday.

ITM Power said the plant has been tested "for many weeks" and said RWE has measured an overall energy efficiency of 86%.
