ITM Power Gets UK Government Funding For Gigastack Study

29th Aug 2019 13:45

(Alliance News) - ITM Power PLC on Thursday said the UK government will provide funding for its Gigastack feasibility study with Orsted and Element Energy.

The funding is for the feasibility study but could lead to a further bid opportunity to implement Gigastack, which is intended to deliver zero-carbon hydrogen using "gigawatt scale polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis".

The goal is to shrink the cost of electrolytic carbon by developing a new 5 megawatt stack module design and a new semi-automated manufacturing facility with an up to 1 gigawatt per year electrolyser capacity so as to up throughput and cut labour costs.

Moreover, Gigastack will also see the use of large scale electrolyser systems of more than 100 megawatts using multiple 5 megawatt units. The use of large electrolysers is intended to exploit synergies.

Funding from Gigastack will come from the BEIS Hydrogen Supply Competition.

ITM Power Chief Executive Graham Cooley said: "The Gigastack project seeks to significantly lower the cost of producing green hydrogen by scaling the individual electrolyser stacks and the production process to 1 gigawatt of electrolysis per annum. We are delighted to be working on this important initiative, backed by the UK government, with Orsted the largest supplier of offshore wind in the UK."

Shares in ITM Power were up 1.6% at 37.28 pence in London on Thursday afternoon.
