Irish harmonised inflation slows to 2.5% in January, more than eyed

(Alliance News) - Ireland's annual harmonised consumer price index inflation rate decelerated more than expected in January, data published by the Central Statistics Office showed Thursday.

The country's harmonised annual CPI inflation rate, which allows for EU-wide comparison, slowed to 2.5% in January from 2.7% in December. This was a notch lower than provisional data published by the CSO in late January which had shown a rate of 2.6%.

Monthly, harmonised consumer prices fell 1.0% in January in Ireland, and in line with provisional data, after climbing 0.6% in December.

Meanwhile, the annual CPI rate slowed to 2.7% in January from 2.8% in December. Monthly, consumer prices in Ireland declined 0.9% in January after a 0.5% uptick in December.

The division with the largest on-year price increase was education services, up 8.9% in January, followed by clothing & footwear, up 7.3%.

The only divisions with on-year declines in consumer prices in January were furnishings, household equipment & routine maintenance, down 0.6%, and transport, down 0.1%.

The division with the sharpest on-month price increase was alcoholic beverages & tobacco, up 2.7%, followed by health with a 0.3% increase.

The largest on-month price decline in January was in clothing & footwear, down 7.2%, followed by recreation, sport & culture, down 3.1%.
