LONDON (Alliance News) - IQE PLC on Monday said it has joined the gallium nitride-on-silicon Industrial Affiliation Program offered by nano-electronics research centre imec, after having received positive results from the recent power diodes project it worked on with imec.
IQE, which designs and manufactures advanced semiconductor wafer products and services, said the Industrial Affiliation Program offers joint research and development on the gallium nitride-on-silicon technology, or GaN technology, to a variety of companies, including integrated device manufacturers, equipment and material suppliers, fabless design houses and packaging companies.
The Industrial Affiliation Program includes research on novel substrates to improve the quality of epitaxial layers, new isolation modules to enhance integration levels, and advanced vertical device development, IQE said. In becoming a partner on the program, IQE added it gains access to next-generation epitaxy, devices and power electronics processes.
"We are delighted to have the opportunity to extend our relationship with imec through the Industrial Affiliation Program," said Wayne Johnson, head of IQE's power business unit.
"The importance of gallium nitride-on-silicon for power devices cannot be understated, particularly as we enter an era of electrically propelled transportation and increasing demands for energy efficient power control systems that require high voltage and high power capabilities," Johnson added.
Shares in IQE were up 1.5% at 20.05 pence on Monday morning.
