IQE Develops 150mm Laser Wafer Process For Low-Cost Applications

19th Mar 2014 11:59

LONDON (Alliance News) - IQE PLC Wednesday said it has developed the world's first 150 millimetre Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser wafer process for high volume, low cost applications.

The advanced semiconductor electronics company said markets for these forms of laser are becoming the device of choice for many applications including gesture recognition for gaming, depth imaging for 3D vision, low energy optical storage, cosmetics, and industrial heating.

The company said that by moving to 150 millimetre wafer sizes, high performance lasers can be manufactured in large volume using fabrication and testing techniques similar to that of light-emitting diodes.

IQE said the improved cost structure of these laser devices will help drive the next wave of innovation in consumer products such as cell phones, tablets and other handheld devices.

The company said initial engineering evaluation and product qualification wafers have already been delivered and initial performances have replicated those of existing smaller wafer sizes, with production expected to ramp up over the coming year.

IQE shares were up 5.2% to 25.25 pence Wednesday.
