LONDON (Alliance News) - Satellite communications company Inmarsat PLC on Tuesday said it has won a contract from the European Space Agency to boost air traffic management in Europe.
Under the contract, Inmarsat will head a consortium of 30 companies in the aviation industry to develop a technical, commercial and operational plan to meet the long-term air traffic communications needs of Europe.
The others partners in the consortium, under the moniker Iris Service Evolution, will include jet makers Airbus and Boeing and Italian national carrier Alitalia.
The contract builds on the Iris Precursor contract Inmarsat won in 2014, under which an initial suite of services was developed to complement existing data link services.
"Air traffic management is under great pressure and there is no doubt that the digitalisation of cockpit communication is a vital building block of the future, opening the door for airlines to truly benefit from enhanced data utilisation," said Leo Mondale, Inmarsat Aviation's president.
Inmarsat shares were up 0.7% to 934.50 pence on Tuesday.
