5th Apr 2016 13:25

LONDON (Alliance News) - Inmarsat PLC Tuesday outlined its roadmap for its Global Xpress satellite network to supply in-flight connectivity, following the GX network entering commercial service at the end of 2015.

The network currently comprises three Ka-band satellites, and the company has committed to a fourth satellite. This fourth satellite is currently completing construction and testing, and will provide additional network capacity.

Additionally, the company reiterated details of its planned European Aviation Network, which will work to integrate a satellite network and an LTE-based ground network to be operated by Deutsche Telekom AG. The first commercial trials of this network are expected in mid-2017.

No financial details or forecasts were included in this roadmap.

"Inmarsat's focus on global mobility is unique in the industry and our aviation broadband roadmap will ensure we continue to grow ahead of demand, with the ability to efficiently move capacity where it?s needed, when it's needed. As a result, our airline customers will benefit from partnering with a highly-focused connectivity provider that is continuously investing to meet the aviation industry?s long-term needs for superior performance and economics," said President of Inmarsat Aviation Leo Mondale in a statement.

Shares in Inmarsat were up 3.9% at 225.00 pence Tuesday afternoon.
