22nd Jan 2015 10:06

LONDON (Alliance News) - Inmarsat PLC on Thursday confirmed it will launch the Inmarsat-5 F2 Global Xpress satellite from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on February 1.

Inmarsat said it is investing USD1.6 billion in the Global Xpress programme. The first satellite was launched in December 2013 and entered commercial service in July 2014, covering the Europe, Middle East and Africa region.

The new launch will cover the Americas and Atlantic Ocean regions.

Inmarsat is planning the launch of the third Global Xpress satellite in the second quarter and is set to start global commercial GX services early in the second half.

"Global Xpress is a truly transformational technology and, as we complete its global roll-out, 2015 promises to be one of the most significant chapters in our company's history," said Inmarsat Chief Executive Officer Rupert Pearce.

Shares in Inmarsat were down 1% to 825.5 pence on Thursday.
