"Illegal Work Stoppage" Halts Construction At First Quantum Minerals' Cobre Project

27th Jun 2014 10:03

LONDON (Alliance News) - First Quantum Minerals Ltd said Friday that construction activity at its Cobre Panama project has been temporarily halted due to an "illegal work stoppage" by some members of its construction workforce over a change to employee work patterns.

The company said that illegal stoppage is related to the implementation of a new work roster of 21 days of work with seven days off from a roster of 12 days of work with two days off.

First Quantum said the new work roster is applicable under the individual employment contracts and within the legal framework for labour in the construction industry in Panama.

"The Company is committed to achieving a resolution to the illegal action and will update stakeholders as warranted," said the base metals miner in a statement.

First Quantum shares were trading 1.23% higher at 1,230 pence per share Friday morning.
