Ilika Reports Record Energy Density With New Ultra-Thin Batteries

12th Feb 2019 10:30

LONDON (Alliance News) - Shares rose in Ilika PLC on Tuesday as it reached a record level of volumetric energy density for its miniature StereaxO solid-state batteries, codenamed Golden Hind.

Shares in the battery technology company were up 14% at 30.70 pence on Tuesday.

Volumetric energy density is the storage capacity of a battery divided by its volume, with a higher figure allowing the battery to be lighter.

Ilika said that it was able to increase Golden Hind's energy density by a factor of three by thinning the batteries to around 250 micrometers in thickness, allowing for ultra-thin cells.

The Golden Hind batteries have been designed for use in miniature medical implants, which Ilika said account for 50% of the company's commercial opportunities.

Prototypes are undergoing parallel evaluation to fully qualify the cells for a product launch in the second quarter of 2019.

"This is the latest improvement in the processing of miniature StereaxO cells. We are integrating our unique approach to materials deposition with standard semiconductor manufacturing technology to deliver best in class solutions," said Chief Executive Officer Greame Purdy.
