IAG Traffic Up In February As British Airways, Vueling Offset Iberia

LONDON (Alliance News) - International Consolidated Airlines Group Wednesday posted increases in traffic in February as growth at British Airways and benefits from its Vueling acquisition continued to offset declines at Spanish airline Iberia.

IAG Premium traffic rose 5.2% compared to the previous year.

The group, which is now made up of British Airways, Iberia and another Spanish carrier, Vueling, said traffic measured in revenue passenger kilometres rose 4.9% in January excluding Vueling. Growth was 11.4% including Vueling, which IAG acquired in April last year.

Passengers carried rose to 4.7 million, up from 3.6 million in the previous year. Including Vueling the are with the biggest growth in passengers carried was the UK and Spain, up 64.5%. Excluding Vueling the growth was only 4.6%. Passengers carried in Latin America and the Caribbean declined 5.2%.

Passenger load factor rose 0.1 points to 75.3% from 75.2%.

IAG said that Iberia had reached agreements in principle with its pilots and cabin crew unions to introduce permanent structural change and fundamentally improve its productivity. Salaries will remain frozen until 2015, and after that increases in salary will be based on the airlines profits.

Revenue passenger kilometres at British Airways rose 4.5% to 9.28 billion from 8.89 billion. Vueling saw revenue passenger kilometers of 973 million.

Iberia revenue passenger kilometers declined 1.0% to 2.79 billion from 2.82 billion

Shares in IAG were trading up 0.4% at 441.60 pence Wednesday afternoon.
