LONDON (Alliance News) - HSBC UK, part of HSBC Holdings PLC, on Friday said it successfully defended itself against an attack on its internet banking system, leaving the website down.
"HSBC UK internet banking was attacked this morning. We successfully defended our systems," @HSBC_UK tweeted. "We are working hard to restore services, and normal service is now being resumed. We apologise for any inconvenience."
The last Friday of January is a day on which many customers are paid by their employers. "We'd like to apologise to all our customers for Online Banking being unavailable. We know how inconvenient this is, and we are doing everything we can to rectify the problem," HSBC said in a message on its online banking website.
Earlier this month, the chief operating officer for HSBC UK, part of HSBC Holdings PLC, apologised for problems that knocked out its online banking services. That outage was not the result of a cyber attack, with HSBC attributing it to an "internal issue". The attack earlier this month prompted Andrew Tyrie, the chairman of the influential Treasury Select Committee, to call for an explanation of the technology failure.
Shares in HSBC Holdings were up 1.3% at 483.65 pence on Friday.
