LONDON (Alliance News) - HSBC Holdings PLC said Monday it has appointed Mexican politician Jose Antonio Meade Kuribrena as an independent non-executive director, effective March 1.
The UK listed lender also said that Independent Non-Executive Director Jonathan Evans, who joined the board in August 2013, intends to retire at the conclusion of the 2019 annual general meeting, slated for April 12.
Meade currently performs consulting, project finance and academic activities. Between 2011 and 2017, Meade held Cabinet-level positions in the Mexican government, including acting as secretary of Finance & Public Credit, secretary of Social Development, secretary of Foreign Affairs and secretary of Energy.
Meade formerly served as chief executive of the National Bank for Rural Credit, where he led the financial restructuring and its transition to a new institution, Financiera Rural.
"I am absolutely delighted to welcome Jose Antonio to the board. He brings with him a wealth of experience gained across a number of key policy areas and his background and knowledge of Latin America will be of great significance to HSBC given the importance we attach to the region. It is particularly worth noting the relevance Mexico holds for HSBC as one of our scale markets," HSBC Chairman Mark Tucker said.
Meade's appointment to the bank's board is for an initial three-year term which, subject to election by shareholders at the 2019 annual general meeting, will expire at the conclusion of the 2022 general meeting.
London listed shares in HSBC were trading 0.5% lower at 620.40 pence each on Monday afternoon.
