LONDON (Alliance News) - Horizonte Minerals PLC said Tuesday it has found high-purity cobalt and nickel sulphate following completed test work on limonite ore samples from the Vermelho nickel-cobalt project in Brazil.
The high purity product in question contained 22% cobalt, which exceeding the reference grade used for sulphate pricing.
In addition, nickel sulphate was produced as a solution, ready for purification to a final battery grade product.
The test work process included a pressure acid leach process and several purification stages for processing the ore from Vermelho, including the production of mixed hydroxide precipitate, re-leaching, the separation of cobalt and nickel, and the crystallisation of cobalt sulphate.
The results from the test work will be integrated into the pre-feasibility study for the Vermelho project, which is currently underway.
"Producing high-purity nickel and cobalt sulphate from the Vermelho project of suitable quality and grade for use in EV battery production is a major milestone in the development of the project. The Vermelho project is a value driver for the company, it is a high-grade scalable resource, with good infrastructure and has the potential to be fast tracked to development," said Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Martin.
Shares in Horizonte Minerals were up 6.3% at 1.83 pence on Tuesday.
