Heathrow says September sees busiest ever start to autumn travel

(Alliance News) - Heathrow on Friday said passenger numbers at the west London airport were up 3.0% in September from a year before, providing the busiest ever start to the autumn travel season.

Heathrow handled 7.3 million travellers last month, up from 7.1 million a year before. The September 2023 figure was the first in the airport's history to surpass 7 million, it said.

Last month's traffic was led by passengers travelling to and from the EU at 2.5 million, up 4.8% from a year before. North America was the second most important destination at 1.9 million passengers, up 2.7%.

Heathrow noted that anchor tenant British Airways will start flying to the Georgian capital of Tbilisi from next summer. BA also next summer will operate more than 400 direct flights per week to North America, serving 26 cities. BA is owned by International Consolidated Airlines Group SA.

On a rolling one-year basis, Heathrow handled 82.9 million passengers in the 12 months to September, up 7.9%.

Total air traffic movement last month were 39,990, up 2.0% from a year before. Cargo handled was 127,534 metric tonnes, up 4.5%.
