Harvest Minerals Does Not Expect Dam Tragedy To Hurt Licence Request

28th Jan 2019 10:12

LONDON (Alliance News) - Fertiliser firm Harvest Minerals Ltd said Monday it does not expect the fatal mining dam incident in Brazil on Friday to impact its application for a mining licence in the country.

On Friday, the Feijao iron ore mine operated by Vale SA at Brumadinho in Minas Gerais saw a dam burst, causing dozens of reported deaths.

After extending its condolences, Harvest emphasised, in response to shareholder queries, it "does not produce any waste material and therefore does not require any tailings disposal." As a result of this, the incident is "unlikely to impact our application for a full mining licence" in the country.

Harvest added it takes the health and safety of its employees "exceptionally seriously". Since its Arapua project began in January 2016, the firm has experienced zero loss-time injuries and has been operating for 1,115 days without injury.

Shares in Harvest were 2.7% higher at 10.30 pence on Monday.
