(Alliance News) - Griffin Mining Ltd on Monday said that a contractor died following an accident at the Caijiaying mine in China.
On Friday evening, the mining contractor's loader and operator was buried by an "ore pass full of excavated paste" while the employee was excavating material. The worker was rushed to the Zhangbei hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The China-focused miner said operations have been suspended at Caijiaying "to facilitate a full investigation".
Griffin Mining Chair Mladen Ninkov said: "A death in any family or organization is inevitably a tragedy for the family involved and the numerous people, organizations and entities whose life that person would have interacted with on a regular basis. In a company such as Griffin, where safety is not only our overwhelming priority, but also where contractors and their staff become part of the Griffin 'family' this fatality has severely impacted our staff, contractors and operations.
"It strengthens our continuing resolve to redouble our efforts to ensure safety is our first, second and last priority. It may sound glib, but our sincerest condolences do truly go out to his family and friends."
Griffin' shares were up 0.6% at 160.00 pence in London on Monday afternoon.
