Great Portland secures approval for West End office development

10th Nov 2025 09:51

(Alliance News) - Great Portland Estates PLC on Monday said it has secured planning permission to refurbish one of its West End assets.

The London-based commercial real estate developer and landlord plans to rework the 74,500 square-foot property, Whittington House, into a modern headquarters building.

Local authority Camden Council "has resolved to grant planning permission...subject to completing a legal agreement," GPE said, targeting delivery of the new site in the first quarter of 2027.

Whittington House is located in WC1, central London, and adjacent to GPE's existing property at 31/34 Alfred Place alongside recent acquisitions, the Gable Building and Courtyard Building.

"We have the potential to create a 220,000 [square-foot] cluster of Grade A Fully Managed and HQ space. This is located just minutes from Tottenham Court Road station and the Elizabeth Line," GPE added.

The firm stressed that the redevelopment will retain features of Whittington House's "iconic Richard Seifert & Partners design," referencing the office architect known for designing London's first skyscraper in the 1980s.

Senior Development Manger Trevor Phyo commented: "We're proud to be breathing new life into this building, recognising its architectural heritage, and transforming it into a standout workplace that reflects the future of office design. This development strengthens our HQ portfolio and reinforces our commitment to delivering exceptional spaces in prime London locations."

GPE shares rose 0.6% to 342.50 pence each on Monday morning in London.
