(Alliance News) - Go-Ahead Group PLC welcomed a new government funding package for bus services in England on Wednesday, as the transport operator's passenger numbers gradually recover.
The bus and train operator said its passenger numbers are now around 65% of pre-pandemic levels.
The Newcastle, England-based firm said the Department for Transport's GBP226.4 million funding package will extend support for bus services from September 2021 to April next year.
The company said the new funding "reflects the government's decision to provide a level of support to the bus network while customer numbers recover following the anticipated ending of Covid-19 restrictions later this month."
Go-Ahead added that: "Earlier this year the government published the National Bus Strategy. The measures it contains to support more bus priority and local improvement plans will help ensure continued passenger growth, and the recovery of the market."
Shares in Go-Ahead were trading down 1.6% at 1,150.00 pence each in London on Wednesday.
Peer FirstGroup also on Wednesday also welcome the government support package for regional bus providers in England.
