Glencore Provides All Available Resources As Katanga Search Continues

10th Mar 2016 07:06

LONDON (Alliance News) - Glencore PLC Wednesday said all available resources have been provided to the search and rescue team that are continuing to look for five people that remain missing following a geotechnical fault at the Katanga operation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Glencore was told about the incident earlier this week by the operator of the mine, Katanga Mining Ltd, in which it holds a 75.3% stake.

A geotechnical failure at the north wall of the KOV open pit mine at the operation has already led to two confirmed deaths, with five still missing.

"The search for the remaining five individuals continues led by 20 search and rescue professionals. All available resources have been allocated to the team. Katanga continues to work closely with the relevant authorities and is providing all the necessary support for the families of the affected individuals," said Glencore Wednesday.

Glencore Chief Executive Ivan Glasberg added: " Despite our relentless and committed programme to improve health and safety across the group, the tragic events at Katanga underscore the ongoing challenge we face to make our operations fatality free. Any loss of life is unacceptable."
