Germany and Britain to step up energy cooperation via North Sea

3rd Nov 2023 14:11

(Alliance News) - Germany and Britain will boost their cooperation in the energy sector by constructing new undersea power cables linking the two nations, the two agreed in a memorandum of understanding signed in London on Friday.

The jointly built "hybrid interconnectors" running via North Sea wind farms should generate large sustainable electricity and hydrogen imports, said the document signed by British Energy Minister Claire Coutinho and German Economy Minister Robert Habeck, according to delegation sources.

The Pioneer news website reported earlier that the NeuConnect undersea cable between the Isle of Grain and Wilhelmshaven on Germany's northern coast is already being planned. Regular operations are scheduled to begin by 2028.

The "Tarchon" interconnector between England's eastern county of Essex and Niederlangen in Germany's north-west Emsland district is also to be developed and commissioned in 2030.

There are further plans for an undersea cable connection from northern Germany to Scotland, incorporating Scottish wind farms. The UK is particularly strong in the offshore energy sector, operating a large number of wind farms in the North Sea.

At the end of September, Germany and the UK announced plans to work more closely on producing hydrogen using electricity from sustainable energy sources.
