LONDON (Alliance News) - Video games retailer GAME Digital said Tuesday it acquired Spanish eSports online platform SocialNAT from Social Electronica Sports Co SL in a bid to expand its eSports division.
GAME Digital, which had acquired gaming events and eSports organiser Multiplay in March 2015, said the acquisition would support the growth of its international eSports business, particularly in Spain.
The SocialNAT platform currently has 150,000 registered users. In 2015, the nascent eSports industry was estimated to have generated around USD748.0 million of revenue globally. This figure is forecast to reach USD1.90 billion by the end of 2018.
No financial details of the deal were revealed.
"eSports present one of the most exciting developments in the industry and the acquisition of SocialNAT will help to accelerate our plans in this area, particularly in Spain," said Pablo Crespo, managing director of GAME Spain.
GAME Digital shares were up 2.3% at 112.00 pence on Tuesday morning.
