Frasers Group cleared in age discrimination claim related to Covid-19

4th Aug 2021 10:01

(Alliance News) - Frasers Group PLC on Wednesday said it received a favourable judgement in its age discrimination claim relating to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In March 2020, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the retailer sent home all workers who were considered vulnerable or who were over 60, which was above and beyond government guidelines at the time.

As a result of this, Frasers Group received an age discrimination claim. The company maintained the decision was the right one for keeping staff safe during the early days of the pandemic.

The tribunal found that "the company was justified in taking the particular steps in order to protect the health and safety of its employees". Furthermore the tribunal noted that the company's "intention to protect the health and safety of vulnerable groups is to be commended."

Shares in Frasers were down 0.4% to 611.00 pence each in London on Wednesday morning.

Shirebrook, Derbyshire-based Frasers owns Sports Direct and the House of Fraser department store chain, among other retail brands.

Late Tuesday, the Telegraph reported that founder Mike Ashley is set to step down as chief executive, passing the role to his prospective son-in-law, Michael Murray, the company's current "head of elevation". Ashley will become deputy chair, the newspaper reported. He had been executive deputy chair until taking back over as CEO in 2016.
