Flybe Finds Cardiff Home For Two Of Its Surplus Embraer E195s

5th Mar 2015 09:28

LONDON (Alliance News) - Flybe Group PLC Thursday said it will open a new base at Cardiff Airport, basing two of its existing surplus Embraer E195 aircraft there to serve 11 destinations in the UK and Europe this summer.

It said one of the aircraft will arrive at Cardiff in June and the other in September. The airline will offer flights from Cardiff to Belfast, Cork, Dublin, Düsseldorf, Edinburgh, Faro, Glasgow, Jersey, Munich, Milan Malpensa, and Paris Charles de Gaulle, and tickets will go on sale from March 6.

"As part of Project Blackbird, we have been looking to find a productive home for our surplus E195 aircraft and we are delighted at this 10 year agreement with Cardiff Airport which involves us basing two of these jets there to serve the Welsh market," Chief Executive Saad Hammad said.

The airline, which is going through a major restructuring in an effort to turn around its fortunes, and has decided that the Bombardier Q400 turboprop aircraft is the most suitable for its future UK regional network rather than the Embraer E195. It is still working out what to do with a further seven E195 aircraft that it has deemed surplus to requirements.

Flybe shares were up 4.2% at 64.35 pence Thursday morning.
