LONDON (Alliance News) - The UK government Tuesday reappointed FirstGroup PLC to run the Thameslink services that run between Brighton and Bedford among other destinations for a further six months, bridging the gap until it creates a new super-franchise encompassing three of the current franchises.
The new super-franchise, which will include the current Thameslink, Southern and Great Northern franchises and will be the largest on the UK network, isn't due to start until September, while the current Thameslink franchise contract was due to end March 31.
"The new contract with FCC represents the best deal for passengers and taxpayers. It ensures the continuity of the existing service and guarantees the completion of the ongoing Thameslink Programme," Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said in a statement.
The government put out an invitation to tender for the new super-franchise last month.
The new operator of the franchise will have a job on its hands to improve customer satisfaction on the routes. A passenger survey by consumer group Which? Monday found that the three current franchises that make up the new franchise were among the seven lowest rated of the country's franchises. First Capital Connect, the FirstGroup franchise that runs Thameslink, had the third-lowest overall satisfaction score.
